Sort of a rant, but not really.

pwAfter a two year hiatus, I decided that maybe it was time to throw some words up in the air and see what lands. I’d like to talk about real life for a moment.

This past week, my Twitter persona hit a milestone … 10,000 followers. The hard way. I do realize that I’m not likely to catch up with Lady Gaga anytime soon (65.7 million, in case you were wondering), but the number kind of snuck up on me and I feel beholden to those who actually reach out and get to know me.

cara_linSince everything is measured in data these days, it’s sometimes easy to forget that there is an actual person behind a username, and they are not just another follower/like/connection/etc. As we hide behind our phones and laptops and tablets, face-to-face interaction has taken a back seat to efficiency. This is true not only in social media, but also shopping, scheduling meetings, car appointments, the list goes on.

momo_suziI participate in a weekly wine chat on Twitter where friends all over the globe open bottles of wine and share a piece of their lives. Though it does take place online, it emulates face-to-face interaction pretty closely. It’s an hour that flies by and I’ve met some amazing, talented people. It’s Tuesdays at 9pm Eastern, hashtag #WiningHourChat and you are welcome to join. I’ve connected with so many wonderful, like-minded life-loving lunatics like myself.

I admit that I feel closer to a lot of my online friends than I do to some members of my own family. Sad but true. And I don’t think I’m the only one who feels that way.

jennOne of my absolute favorite activities is meeting awesome people on the other side. And when I see others meeting their internet friends for the first time, it makes me smile.

Some of you may know that I’m going through some major struggles in my life right now and am forced to face some demons that I’ve been ignoring for far too long. I can honestly say that the support that I’ve gotten from those who I’ve connected with online has been very encouraging.

loriSo where was I going with this? Oh, yeah. My suggestion is to get out from behind your screen and reach out to people. And when I say you, I mean me. The internet is awesome but it does not replace human interaction.

Thank you for reading. See you in another two years. 😉
