Spumante – Wine Term of the Week

Spumante - Wine Term of the WeekSpumante is the Italian word for sparkling wine.

When I was a kid, the Martini & Rossi Asti Spumante commercials were all over prime time television..

Asti refers to the town in Piedmont (Italy) where the (Moscato Bianco) grapes for the sparkling wine are grown. Over the years, the name ‘Asti Spumante’ has evolved into just ‘Asti’.

The Italians have a similar word, frizzante, which means only slightly sparkling.
