Because I’m 1/8 Irish on my Mother’s side I try to do my part to promote St. Pat’s each year. At least a little bit. That usually involves wearing a green shirt to work or stopping at McDonald’s for a shamrock shake or maybe knocking back a Guinness or two at one of the two thousand or so Irish pubs in the area.
This year, since I’m all wrapped up in this wine thing I was curious if any local wineries did something different. A little research uncovered that one place, Penn’s Woods was offering … you guessed it: green wine. So I decided to stop by since it was only 15 minutes from work. Ok … 45 minutes at rush hour.
I wasn’t sure what kind of crowd to expect. The typical St. Patricks bar scene can be a bit crazy but wineries generally cater to a completely different dynamic. As I pulled into the parking lot it appeared that the Gaelic drinking parade missed Penn’s Woods. I was the only one there.
The tasting facility is located in an old house on a beautiful estate in Chadds Ford just far enough away from the hustle & bustle of the suburban rat race. I met Andrea, Penn’s Woods delightful hostess outside with her dog. She explained to me that Thursdays tend to be slow anyway since they only recently expanded their hours. Plus the fact that the green wine wasn’t heavily marketed and this is the first year that Penn’s Woods tried this promotion.
I decided to NOT go for the full tasting as my winery touring contingent will be here next weekend for the full Penn’s Woods experience (more to come). Andrea poured me a glass of the green tinted Proprietor Reserve, a nice crisp blend of Pinot Grigio & Chardonnay. A very easy drinking wine with aromas of tropical fruit. It was an absolutely beautiful afternoon, and I had an opportunity to chat up Andrea about the goings on at Penn’s Woods. I actually visited a few years ago but the place has expanded the indoor tasting area since then and It’s more accomodating to groups of visitors. She also informed me that there are outdoor expansion plans as well … which might call for future visits hahaha 😉
All in all a very nice visit. I look forward to the full tasting on the 26th for BOTB which includes olive oil & vinegar pairings as well. Thanks Andrea!
On the way down I heard on the radio that the life coach himself, 94 WYSP’s Danny Bonaduce was at nearby Chubby Balboa’s for their Saint Patty’s Day celebration. I stopped by hoping to get a picture w/ him as I’m a huge fan of his show during my morning drive. I walked in to the place and could barely move. Danny was running late anyway so I squeezed my way out of there. By obsevation it would appear that Guinness, Harp and green tinted beer still run the show for St. Patricks …
